Love does not begin and end the way we seem to think it does. Love is a battle, love is a war; love is a growing up."

James Baldwin

Relationship Therapy

I shy away from the term "couples therapy" because it doesn't feel all inclusive to me. Traditionally, couples have been identified as a man and woman. Although I will use the term "couples therapy" you will also hear me say "relationship therapy" or "love therapy"  both terms that I consider to be more inclusive.

How would you describe your relationship? Are all parties fulfilled? Are you supportive? Are you supported? How do you communicate with each other? Do you understand each others communication styles? What does it mean when your partner gets silent? What does it mean when you get silent? Do you feel heard?

I believe that although most people say that they desire to be in love they have no idea of how to actually do that. The concept of "falling" in love indicates that you have no control over the action. While that may be true and scientists have done research on the brain chemistry involved in the process of falling in love anyone who has ever been in love can tell you that staying in love requires effort. Love is an action word and it is in your control.

Romantic relationships require a lot of work but once the foundation is firmly set the work that follows should become maintenance. I can help you set a strong foundation or be your support when you need a little relationship tune-up.

If you're contemplating living together, getting married or having children these are all very happy times but also high stress times. Maybe you're empty nesters who have spent so much time raising children that you've forgotten how to connect with each other. There are many conversations that people don't have with each other and instead assumptions are made. These assumptions can destroy relationships. My job is to help you say what you "think" has already been said.
